December 4th, 2009 admin No comments

What is ADHD? – It’s a common behavioral disorder, ADHD affects about 10% of children who are school going. This disorder is more likely to affect boys than girls though the exact reason for this is not known. Those diagnosed with this condition are generally hyperactive, act without thinking and are unable to focus on objects or people.

Kids affected by this condition may also be unable to sit still in one place or pay attention to what is being instructed to them because of lack of attention to details. Those afflicted with this condition may be unable to perform well academically and socially. However with appropriate treatment, kids suffering from this condition can manage their symptoms successfully.

ADHD can be of three types namely a hyper active impulsive type, an inattentive type or combined type. The symptoms of people suffering from the inattentive type of ADHD include apparent problems with listening, inability to focus on details or being careless, organizational problems, tendency to lose things, forgetfulness etc. Those coming under the hyperactive-impulsive type exhibit symptoms such as squirming or fidgeting, inability to play quietly, talking excessively, excessive climbing or running etc. A combination of these symptoms can be found in people coming under the combined type. There are several effective stimulants that can be prescribed by the doctor to treat ADHD. The problem with the use of stimulants is that it can lead to abuse and dependence when used for a longer period. Also it must be used carefully by those who are addicted to alcohol or drugs. Antidepressants can also be made use of to treat ADHD. Doctors recommend antidepressant therapy in children or adults who suffer from ADHD and significant depression.
